Historic Overlay District The Tarboro Town Council established the Tarboro Historic District and Commission in 1976. This local Historic District is part of the larger National Register Historic District which includes downtown. By designating the local district, the Town recognized the cultural, historic, and economic value of the area and committed to conserve, protect, and enhance this valuable resource. The Tarboro Historic District Commission has the authority to review and regulate changes within the district as provided in Article XI, Section 168 of the Unified Development Ordinance. Anyone wishing to make exterior changes to a property in the Historic District must first petition for a Certificate of Appropriateness. Applications for Certificates of Appropriateness can be obtained from the Planning Director during normal office hours.
