Special hospital features at Heritage Hospital include a hospitalist program. Hospitalists are doctors who provide 24-hour in-hospital coverage, working closely with your primary care doctor to make sure your healthcare needs are met both during your hospital stay and after you are discharged. Heritage Hospital also offers an inpatient rehabilitation unit, same day surgery center, a state-of-the-art critical care unit, a level III intermediate care nursery for high risk infants, and Special Beginnings Family Birthing Center, a family-oriented birthing center that provides a unique labor, delivery and recovery experience in an attractively decorated suite. A physician-staffed emergency department is also open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Through its affiliation with University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, Heritage Hospital has expanded key services to meet the healthcare needs of Tarboro and Edgecombe County.  The Heritage Hospital Cancer Center has been operational since 1997 and was recently relocated to a free-standing clinic on the Heritage Hospital campus. With cancer specialists from the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center in Greenville and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, the Heritage Hospital Cancer Center offers a wide range of cancer treatments and services, including clinical trials.  Heritage also boasts a Chronic Heart Failure Clinic which has improved the quality of life of many Edgecombe County residents diagnosed with this condition.

Heritage offers a variety of outpatient programs including sophisticated imaging in ultrasound, digital mammography, nuclear medicine, MRI and CT.  Cardiopulmonary, rehabilitation therapy services, and a certified pathology laboratory are also included in its outpatient services. With over 20 specialties represented on the hospital's medical staff, the wide range of surgical specialties includes urology, gynecology, ophthalmology, podiatry, otolaryngology, peripheral vascular and orthopedic procedures.
