Tarboro's oldest and largest retail sales area is located downtown near the banks of the Tar River. An innovative downtown revitalization program has attracted an array of shopping, banking and service facilities, all fronting brick sidewalks and tree-lined streets, and within walking distance of the town's National Historic District.
